Generative Engine Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing a website to be cited by AI-powered generative search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of getting your business cited by AI chatbots and generative search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude (Anthropic), Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. While SEO targets ranking position, GEO targets citation in AI-generated answers.

How GEO differs from SEO

  • SEO target: Position #1 on a search engine results page.
  • GEO target: Citation inside an AI-synthesized answer.
  • SEO success: Click-through rate from rankings.
  • GEO success: Brand mentions in AI responses + referral traffic.

The strategies overlap heavily — strong SEO content is usually strong GEO content — but GEO has unique signals.

What AI engines reward

  1. Direct factual statements. "Zorva Labs charges $55/month" beats vague pricing language.
  2. Named human authors. Person schema and visible author bios significantly increase citation rate.
  3. Structured Q&A blocks. FAQPage schema provides pre-formatted answers AI engines can quote directly.
  4. Comparison content. "X vs Y" pages with structured data get pulled into AI answers.
  5. Outbound citations. Pages that link to reputable sources are themselves cited more often.
  6. Recency. Fresh dateModified values weight higher.
  7. Llms.txt files. A Markdown summary of your site at /llms.txt gives AI engines a clean source of truth.

The /llms.txt convention

An emerging GEO standard: place a /llms.txt file at your site root with a Markdown-formatted summary of your business, services, pricing, FAQs, and citation guidance for AI engines. Zorva Labs maintains one as a reference.

AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt

Default User-Agent: * rules already permit these, but explicit allowlisting is a positive signal:

  • OpenAI: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User
  • Anthropic: ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, Claude-Web
  • Perplexity: PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User
  • Google: Google-Extended (separate from Googlebot)
  • Apple: Applebot-Extended
  • Common Crawl: CCBot (training data feeder for many models)
  • Others: Bytespider (TikTok/Doubao), Meta-ExternalAgent (Llama), Amazonbot, DuckAssistBot, MistralAI-User

How long until GEO results show up?

  • Perplexity: 1-7 days (live search at query time).
  • Google AI Overviews: 2-4 weeks.
  • ChatGPT (training): 2-6 months between model updates.
  • ChatGPT (SearchGPT live): 1-2 weeks.
  • Claude: 2-4 weeks.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google still drives the majority of search traffic in 2026, and traditional SEO remains foundational. But the search ecosystem has fragmented — your strategy needs to extend beyond Google. The good news: most GEO best practices also strengthen traditional SEO, so the two reinforce each other.
