AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant — and Google's featured snippets — pick your business as the single definitive answer.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of getting your content selected as the single definitive answer by voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant) and Google's featured snippet boxes. Unlike traditional search where users see 10 results, voice and snippet queries return one answer — making AEO the most winner-take-all form of search marketing.

Why AEO is winner-take-all

When you Google a question, you get 10 blue links. When you ask Siri the same question, you get one spoken answer. There's no scroll. No second place. Either your content is the answer, or it doesn't exist for that query.

How voice assistants pick the answer

  • Siri: Apple Maps for local queries, Bing for general queries, Wikipedia for definitions.
  • Alexa: Bing for most queries, Yelp for local, Wikipedia for definitions.
  • Google Assistant: Google Search featured snippets and Knowledge Graph.

All three favor: short direct answers (around 30 words), strong schema markup, and authoritative sources.

What to ship for AEO

1. Direct-answer Q&A blocks

Write content in question format with 25-40 word direct answers. This is the exact length voice assistants read aloud.

2. FAQPage schema

Wrap Q&A blocks in FAQPage JSON-LD. Strongest signal that your content is answer-formatted.

3. SpeakableSpecification schema

Add SpeakableSpecification to your schema, pointing at data-speakable CSS selectors on your visible Q&A elements. Explicitly tells Google Assistant what to read aloud.

4. Conversational keyword targeting

Voice queries are longer and more natural than typed queries. People type "Nashville web design"; they speak "what's the best web design company in Nashville for small business." Target full conversational phrases.

5. Featured snippet structure

To win Google's featured snippet (which Google Assistant reads aloud):

  • Open the answer paragraph by restating the question.
  • Keep the answer to 40-60 words.
  • Use a clear H2 with the question phrasing.
  • Use real <ul> or <ol> markup for list answers.

6. Google Business Profile completeness

For local voice queries — the largest AEO category — Google Business Profile is more important than your website. Fill out hours, phone, address, photos, services, posts, products. Voice assistants pull directly from this data.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Long-winded answers that voice assistants truncate.
  • Question-as-headline but answer buried in a paragraph below.
  • FAQPage schema with content that doesn't match the visible page.
  • Targeting only short-tail keywords (voice queries are longer).
  • Neglecting Google Business Profile for local businesses.
